Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved,
heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,
bearing with one another and forgiving one another,
if one has a grievance against another;
as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do.
And over all these put on love,
that is, the bond of perfection.
And let the peace of Christ control your hearts,
the peace into which you were also called in one body.
And be thankful.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,
as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another,
singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs
with gratitude in your hearts to God.
And whatever you do,
in word or in deed,
do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Colossians 3:12-17

BAPTISMS - INFANTS/CHILDREN

Arrangements should be made well in advance so that parents and godparents will have adequate time to prepare for the celebration of Baptism. No baptisms are celebrated until Easter. A team of parishioners conducts pre-baptismal sessions. Parents are required to attend one of these sessions prior to the date of Baptism.

If you are or have a school-age child who has not been baptized and who would like to be, St. Monica offers a preparation process. If interested, please contact Susan Gindy at 925-376-6900.

BOOK REVIEWS

Every fourth Tuesday of the month, from October to April, under the sponsorship of the Women's Guild, a professional reviewer assesses a current book - fiction or non-fiction - of her/his choosing. The review follows a half-hour social time, with simple snacks, beginning at 12:30 PM. The title and author of the book appear in the bulletin for two weekends prior to the review.

The meetings offer a wonderful opportunity to socialize, meet new people, and be "on top of" a latest bestseller. There is no need to have read the book - just sit back and absorb. Membership is $15 for six reviews and is open to anyone.

SHOES-THAT-FIT

See current flyer

The St. Monica Shoes-That-Fit program is an extensive outreach activity that provides shoes and other new articles of school clothing to impoverished elementary schoolchildren at St. Anthony School in East Oakland. It matches volunteer parish donors with the basic clothing needs of individual students, many of whom attend school every day with ill-fitting or terribly-worn shoes, slacks, skirts, socks and other uniform clothes. The parents of these children are simply unable to afford what we would consider to be basic articles of clothing, so St. Monica parishioners donate the needed items to address this quiet tragedy.

The concept is simple and uniquely personal. During the September through May school year, bulletin boards in both entrances to Church display 3x5 index cards with the first names and clothing needs of girls and boys at St. Anthony School. (Their principals and teachers tell us which children need help and specifically what item of clothing and what size they need.) Donors select a card of their choice, purchase the item (most of which can be acquired with a phone call and shipped directly to the parishioner's home), and return it the following week to the Shoes-That-Fit collection boxes beneath the bulletin boards. There are items to fit every budget, and it's a great way to engage the whole family-especially the children-in an easy-to-comprehend and truly meaningful act of charity.

Lastly, the Shoes-That-Fit committee always welcomes any volunteers that wish to help with easy, discrete tasks that have a clear beginning and end. We're a fun-loving group that draws great personal satisfaction from helping these needy children.

WOMEN'S FAITHSHARING

Our page

Women's Faithsharing is building a community of St. Monica women who deepen their friendships and faith through discussion and reflection on questions related to Catholic Christianity. What does it mean to be a Catholic woman today? With all of the discussion of Christian values, do you feel that your concerns and issues as a Catholic woman are addressed? What will this new pope mean for the direction of our faith? How does American Catholicism differ from that practiced elsewhere in the world? What does the future hold for our church and our faith? What strength can we pull from those women in faith who have gone before us? Join Women's Faithsharing for an exploration of our Catholic identity.

The group meets in the Peace Room from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday morning of each month, from mid-September through May. Each meeting the women start with a prayer, listen to a speaker or follow a discussion guide, and share their thoughts at a table of eight to ten women.

All St. Monica Women are encouraged to attend one or all of the meetings. We also welcome friends of St. Monica women who would like to join us.
