Baptisms - Infants and Children
If you are planning to have your child baptized, parents should begin this process 4 months prior to the celebration. If you have a school age child who has not been baptized, we offer an additional preparation process for the child.
Preparation steps are as follows:
1. Register in the parish. Exceptions are made for grandchildren of our parishioners as long as the parents of the child present a letter from the pastor of their church where they worship and they meet all St. Monica's baptismal requirements.
2. Both parents attend an interview with Fr. Wayne Campbell, Pastor or Susan Gindy, Pastoral Associate.
3. Both parents and godparents attend one pre-baptism session in preparation for each child's baptism. Pre-baptism sessions for 2010 are scheduled as follows: Wednesdays, January 20, March 10, May 5, July 14, September 8, and November 17 at 7:30 PM in the Parish Center Peace Room.
4. Fill out a Baptismal Registration Form.
Our baptisms are celebrated generally on the first Sunday of the month after the 11 AM Mass with the exception of Easter Sunday and the feast of the Baptism of the Lord in January when they are celebrated during the Sunday Mass. No baptisms are scheduled during Lent.
When choosing a godparent, Canon Law 874 requires that the godparent be 16 years of age and fully initiated into the Catholic Church by receiving the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and Eucharist and who leads a life of faith in keeping with the function to be taken on. It is required that each child to be baptized have at least one Catholic godparent.
It is customary that the family make a free-will offering the church at the time of their child's baptism. The average offering at St. Monica is $100.
Please contact Susan Gindy, Pastoral Associate to arrange your child's baptism at 925.376.6900 X203.
